Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 5

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ

As for he who thinks himself without need,[1]


1- i.e., without need of faith or need of AllŒh (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ). Here it is in reference to a certain influential member of the Quraysh whom the Prophet () had hoped to bring to IslŒm.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 6

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

To him you give attention.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 7

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.[1]


1- The Prophet () was responsible only for conveying the message, not for ultimate guidance.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 8

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 9

وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ

While he fears [AllŒh],



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 10

فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

From him you are distracted.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 11

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ

No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 12

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

So whoever wills may remember it.[1]


1- The revelation. Or "Him," i.e., AllŒh (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ).


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 13

فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 14

مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ

Exalted and purified,



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 15

بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 16

كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ

Noble and dutiful.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 17

قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ

Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man;[1] how disbelieving is he.


1- i.e., those who deny AllŒh's message.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 18

مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 19

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;[1]


1- His proportions, provisions, life span, etc.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 20

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

Then He eased the way for him;[1]


1- Into this world (i.e., his birth). It may also refer to life itself, which has been made easier by AllŒh's guidance.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 21

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.[1]


1- To conceal his decaying body.


Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 22

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 23

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 24

فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

Then let mankind look at his food



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 25

أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا

How We poured down water in torrents,



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 26

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 27

فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا

And caused to grow within it grain



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 28

وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا

And grapes and herbage



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 29

وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا

And olive and palm trees



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 30

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا

And gardens of dense shrubbery



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 31

وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا

And fruit and grass



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 32

مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ

[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.



Sura: ‘ABASA 

Aya : 33

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

But when there comes the Deafening Blast[1]


1- The piercing blast of the Horn which signals resurrection. A§-êŒkhkhah is also a name for the Day of Resurrection.

Aya : 34

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ

On the Day a man will flee from his brother
