Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 61

And when they come to you, they say, "We believe." But they have entered with disbelief [in their hearts], and they have certainly left with it. And AllŒh is most knowing of what they were concealing.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 62

And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 63

Why do the rabbis and religious scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been practicing.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 64

And the Jews say, "The hand of AllŒh is chained."[1] Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war [against you], AllŒh extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and AllŒh does not like corrupters.

1- Implying inability to give or stinginess.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 65

And if only the People of the Scripture had believed and feared AllŒh, We would have removed from them their misdeeds and admitted them to Gardens of Pleasure.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 66

And if only they had upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord [i.e., the QurÕŒn], they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet.[1] Among them are a moderate [i.e., acceptable] community, but many of them evil is that which they do.

1- i.e., in great abundance.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 67

O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And AllŒh will protect you from the people. Indeed, AllŒh does not guide the disbelieving people.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 68

Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the QurÕŒn]." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 69

Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muúammad ()] and those [before him ()] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians those [among them] who believed in AllŒh and the Last Day and did righteousness no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.[1]

1- See footnote to 2:62.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 70

We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 71

And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then AllŒh turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And AllŒh is Seeing of what they do.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 72

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "AllŒh is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship AllŒh, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with AllŒh AllŒh has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 73

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "AllŒh is the third of three."[1] And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

1- i.e., one part of three, referring to the Christian concept of trinity.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 74

So will they not repent to AllŒh and seek His forgiveness? And AllŒh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 75

The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food.[1] Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.

1- They were in need of sustenance, proving that they were creations of AllŒh, not divine beings.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 76

Say, "Do you worship besides AllŒh that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is AllŒh who is the Hearing, the Knowing?"

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 77

Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 78

Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 79

They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 80

You see many of them becoming allies of those who disbelieved [i.e., the polytheists]. How wretched is that which they have put forth for themselves in that AllŒh has become angry with them, and in the punishment they will abide eternally.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 81

And if they had believed in AllŒh and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 82

You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with AllŒh; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 83

And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 84

And why should we not believe in AllŒh and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people."

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 85

So AllŒh rewarded them for what they said[1] with gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of doers of good.

1- i.e., their admission and acceptance of the truth and commitment to AllŒh's religion (IslŒm).

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 86

But those who disbelieved and denied Our signs they are the companions of Hellfire.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 87

O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which AllŒh has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, AllŒh does not like transgressors.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 88

And eat of what AllŒh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear AllŒh, in whom you are believers.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 89

AllŒh will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless[1] in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation[2] is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths.[3] Thus does AllŒh make clear to you His verses [i.e., revealed law] that you may be grateful.

1- i.e., what is sworn to only out of habit of speech or what one utters carelessly without true intent.
2- i.e., that for a deliberate oath.
3- i.e., do not take oaths indiscriminately or swear to do that which is sinful, requiring expiation.

Sura: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Aya : 90

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than AllŒh], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid[1] it that you may be successful.

1- The prohibition understood from the word "avoid" is stronger than if AllŒh (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ) had merely said, "Abstain." The former requires distancing oneself from anything remotely related to these practices.
