Sura: AN-NISĀ’

Aya : 163

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muúammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants,[1] Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

1- Al-AsbŒ‹. See footnote to 2:136.

Sura: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Aya : 86

And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.

Sura: YŪNUS

Aya : 98

Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.

Sura: AL‑ANBIYĀ’

Aya : 87

And [mention] the man of the fish [i.e., Jonah], when he went off in anger[1] and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him.[2] And he called out within the darknesses,[3] "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

1- At the disbelief of his people.
2- Or "would not restrict him" in the belly of the fish.
3- That of the night, of the sea, and of the fish's interior.

Sura: AL‑ANBIYĀ’

Aya : 88

So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 139

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 140

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 141

And he drew lots[1] and was among the losers.

1- To determine who would be cast overboard in order to save the other passengers. Having been overloaded, the ship was on the verge of sinking.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 142

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.[1]

1- For having given up hope on his people prematurely and having left them without permission from AllŒh.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 143

And had he not been of those who exalt AllŒh,

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 144

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.[1]

1- Meaning that the belly of the fish would have become his grave.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 145

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 146

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.[1]

1- Which is known to give cooling shade and to be a repellent of flies.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 147

And We sent him[1] to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

1- i.e., returned him thereafter.

Sura: AṢ-ṢĀFFĀT

Aya : 148

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

Sura: AL‑QALAM

Aya : 48

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muúammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.

Sura: AL‑QALAM

Aya : 49

If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.[1]

1- But instead, AllŒh accepted his repentance and provided means for his recovery. See 37:139-148.

Sura: AL‑QALAM

Aya : 50

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
