But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.
Tarayya :
Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].[1]
1- An alternative meaning is "running [from the snake]."
And he gathered [his people] and called out.
And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
So AllŒh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression].[1].
1- i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself up as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses.
Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [AllŒh].
Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., AllŒh] constructed it.
He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.[1]
1- i.e., created the day from within the surrounding darkness.
And after that He spread the earth.
He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
And the mountains He set firmly
As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity[1] –
1- i.e., the Day of Resurrection.
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see –
So as for he who transgressed
And preferred the life of the world,
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord[1] and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
1- See footnote to 55:46
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
They ask you, [O Muúammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?[1]
1- Literally, "resting" or "establishment."
In what [position] are you that you should mention it?[1]
1- Meaning that Muúammad () had no knowledge of it, so how could he inform them?
To your Lord is its finality.[1]
1- i.e., its destination and termination. And to Him belongs ultimate knowledge of it.
You are only a warner for those who fear it.
It will be, on the Day they see it,[1] as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
1- i.e., the Hour, the Resurrection.
He [i.e., the Prophet () ] frowned and turned away
Because there came to him the blind man,[1] [interrupting].
1- ÔAbdullŒh, the son of Umm Makt´m.
But what would make you perceive, [O Muúammad], that perhaps he might be purified[1]
1- As a result of what he learns from you.
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
