وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ نَّاضِرَةٌ
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٞ
Looking at their Lord.[1]
1- The people of Paradise will actually see their Creator in the Hereafter.
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بَاسِرَةٞ
And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
تَظُنُّ أَن يُفۡعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٞ
Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِيَ
No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones[1]
1- At the time it is about to leave the body when one is on the verge of death.
وَقِيلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقٖ
And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ
And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation
وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ
And the leg is wound about the leg,[1]
1- From the difficulties the person faces at death or his sudden awareness of the realities of both this world and the Hereafter. It may also refer to his shrouding after death.
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ
To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.[1]
1- Literally, "driving" or "herding" or "the place to which one is driven."
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ
And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.
وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
But [instead], he denied and turned away.
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ
And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].
أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ
Woe to you, and woe!
ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰٓ
Then woe to you, and woe!
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى
Does man think that he will be left neglected?[1]
1- i.e., to no end, without responsibility, or without being returned to the Creator for judgement.
أَلَمۡ يَكُ نُطۡفَةٗ مِّن مَّنِيّٖ يُمۡنَىٰ
Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةٗ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ
Then he was a clinging clot, and [AllŒh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]
فَجَعَلَ مِنۡهُ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ
And made of him two mates, the male and the female.
أَلَيۡسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحۡـِۧيَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ
Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
هَلۡ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَٰنِ حِينٞ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهۡرِ لَمۡ يَكُن شَيۡـٔٗا مَّذۡكُورًا
Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?
إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ أَمۡشَاجٖ نَّبۡتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرًا
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture[1] that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
1- i.e., a combination of the male and female substance, within the womb.
إِنَّا هَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرٗا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
إِنَّآ أَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ سَلَٰسِلَاْ وَأَغۡلَٰلٗا وَسَعِيرًا
Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.
إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ يَشۡرَبُونَ مِن كَأۡسٖ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا
Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of KŒf´r,[1]
1- A sweet-smelling spring in Paradise.
عَيۡنٗا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفۡجِيرٗا
A spring of which the [righteous] servants of AllŒh will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].
يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذۡرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوۡمٗا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسۡتَطِيرٗا
They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
وَيُطۡعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسۡكِينٗا وَيَتِيمٗا وَأَسِيرًا
And they give food in spite of love for it[1] to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
1- The meaning here may also be "out of love for Him," i.e., AllŒh (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ).
إِنَّمَا نُطۡعِمُكُمۡ لِوَجۡهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمۡ جَزَآءٗ وَلَا شُكُورًا
[Saying], "We feed you only for the face [i.e., approval] of AllŒh. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوۡمًا عَبُوسٗا قَمۡطَرِيرٗا
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
