And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision[1] and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment[2] except that which [necessarily] appears thereof[3] and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire,[4] or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to AllŒh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

1- Looking only at what is lawful and averting their eyes from what is unlawful.
2- Both natural beauty, such as hair or body shape, and that with which a woman beautifies herself of clothing, jewelry, etc.
3- i.e., the outer garments or whatever might appear out of necessity, such as a part of the face or the hands.
4- Referring to an abnormal condition in which a man is devoid of sexual feeling.

And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, AllŒh will enrich them from His bounty, and AllŒh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until AllŒh enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess[1] then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of AllŒh which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, AllŒh is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful.

1- i.e., those slaves who desire to purchase their freedom from their owners for a price agreed upon by both.

And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And AllŒh is Hearing and Knowing.

AllŒh has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful[1] your mothers. And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but AllŒh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.

1- By the expression "You are to me like the back of my mother." Such an oath taken against approaching one's wife was a pre-IslŒmic practice declared by AllŒh (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ) to be a sin requiring expiation as described in 58:3-4.

You, [O Muúammad], may put aside whom you will of them[1] or take to yourself whom you will. And any that you desire of those [wives] from whom you had [temporarily] separated there is no blame upon you [in returning her]. That is more suitable that they should be content and not grieve and that they should be satisfied with what you have given them all of them. And AllŒh knows what is in your hearts. And ever is AllŒh Knowing and Forbearing.

1- Those mentioned in the previous verse as being lawful to the Prophet () or his wives to which he was married.

There is no blame upon them [i.e., women] concerning their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons or their women or those their right hands possess [i.e., slaves].[1] And fear AllŒh. Indeed AllŒh is ever, over all things, Witness.

1- It is permissible for a woman to appear before these people without complete covering and to be alone with them. The brothers of both parents (uncles) are included as "fathers" or "parents," according to úad¥th.

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments.[1] That is more suitable that they will be known[2] and not be abused. And ever is AllŒh Forgiving and Merciful.[3]

1- The jilbŒb, which is defined as a cloak covering the head and reaching to the ground, thereby covering the woman's entire body.
2- As chaste believing women.
3- Or "and AllŒh was Forgiving and Merciful" of what occurred before this injunction or before knowledge of it.

And AllŒh created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop; then He made you mates. And no female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register. Indeed, that for AllŒh is easy.

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

Certainly has AllŒh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muúammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to AllŒh. And AllŒh hears your dialogue; indeed, AllŒh is Hearing and Seeing.

Those who pronounce thihŒr[1] among you [to separate] from their wives they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, AllŒh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

1- The saying by a husband to his wife, "You are to me like the back of my mother," meaning unlawful to approach. This was a type of divorce practiced by the Arabs before the prophethood of Muúammad ().

And those who pronounce thihŒr from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and AllŒh is Aware of what you do.

And he who does not find [a slave] then a fast for two months consecutively[1] before they touch one another; and he who is unable then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in AllŒh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] AllŒh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.

1- See footnote to 4:92.

O Prophet, when you [Muslims] divorce women, divorce them for [the commencement of] their waiting period and keep count of the waiting period,[1] and fear AllŒh, your Lord. Do not turn them out of their [husbands'] houses, nor should they [themselves] leave [during that period] unless they are committing a clear immorality. And those are the limits [set by] AllŒh. And whoever transgresses the limits of AllŒh has certainly wronged himself. You know not; perhaps AllŒh will bring about after that a [different] matter.[2]

1- See rulings in 2:228-233. A wife should not be divorced except after the completion of her menstrual period but before sexual intercourse has occurred, or else during a confirmed pregnancy. The pronouncement of divorce begins her waiting period (Ôiddah).
2- Such as regret or renewed desire for the wife.

And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] AllŒh. That is instructed to whoever should believe in AllŒh and the Last Day. And whoever fears AllŒh He will make for him a way out[1]

1- i.e., relief from distress.

Lodge them[1] [in a section] of where you dwell out of your means and do not harm them in order to oppress them.[2] And if they should be pregnant, then spend on them until they give birth. And if they breastfeed for you, then give them their payment and confer among yourselves in the acceptable way; but if you are in discord, then there may breastfeed for him [i.e., the father] another woman.[3]

1- During their waiting period (referring to wives whose divorce has been pronounced).
2- So that they would be forced to leave or to ransom themselves.
3- See 2:233.

Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted let him spend from what AllŒh has given him. AllŒh does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. AllŒh will bring about, after hardship, ease [i.e., relief].

AllŒh presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them,[1] so they [i.e., those prophets] did not avail them from AllŒh at all, and it was said, "Enter the Fire with those who enter."

1- In the matter of religion.

And AllŒh presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people."

And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of ÔImrŒn, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel [i.e., Gabriel], and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess,[1] for indeed, they are not to be blamed

1- i.e., female slaves.

And when the souls are paired[1]

1- With another like soul. It can also mean "joined" (with their groups or sects).

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

For what sin she was killed

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].[1]

1- i.e., all of one's deeds from worldly life, which have accompanied the soul to the Hereafter.
