Ayah : 78

And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except [indulgement in] wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.

Ayah : 79

So woe[1] to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from AllŒh," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.

1- i.e., death and destruction.

Ayah : 87

And We did certainly give Moses the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit [i.e., the angel Gabriel]. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.

Ayah : 213

Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then AllŒh sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed. And none differed over it [i.e., the Scripture] except those who were given it after the clear proofs came to them out of jealous animosity among themselves. And AllŒh guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed, by His permission. And AllŒh guides whom He wills to a straight path.

Surah: ĀLI ‘IMRĀN

Ayah : 3

He has sent down upon you, [O Muúammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel

Surah: ĀLI ‘IMRĀN

Ayah : 4

Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Criterion [i.e., the QurÕŒn]. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of AllŒh will have a severe punishment, and AllŒh is Exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.[1]

1-i.e., He who restores justice by punishing those who persist in wrongdoing, fail to heed warnings and are unrepentant

Surah: ĀLI ‘IMRĀN

Ayah : 23

Do you not consider, [O Muúammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of AllŒh that it should arbitrate between them;[1] then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.

1- Referring to the Jews of Mad¥nah who refused to implement the rulings given by AllŒh in the Torah or to acknowledge the Prophet (), whose coming was mentioned therein.

Surah: ĀLI ‘IMRĀN

Ayah : 24

That is because they say, "Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing.

Surah: ĀLI ‘IMRĀN

Ayah : 184

Then if they deny you, [O Muúammad] so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture.[1]

1- The unaltered, original Torah and Gospel, which were revealed by AllŒh.

Surah: AN-NISĀ’

Ayah : 163

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muúammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants,[1] Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

1- Al-AsbŒ‹. See footnote to 2:136.

Surah: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Ayah : 44

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to AllŒh] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of AllŒh, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price [i.e., worldly gain]. And whoever does not judge by what AllŒh has revealed then it is those who are the disbelievers.

Surah: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Ayah : 46

And We sent, following in their footsteps,[1] Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous.

1- i.e., following the tradition of the prophets of the Children of Israel.

Surah: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Ayah : 48

And We have revealed to you, [O Muúammad], the Book [i.e., the QurÕŒn] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what AllŒh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method.[1] Had AllŒh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good.[2] To AllŒh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

1- Prior to this revelation, which supersedes all previous scriptures.
2- i.e., obedience to AllŒh according to what He enjoined in the QurÕŒn and through the sunnah of His Prophet ().

Surah: AL‑MĀ’IDAH

Ayah : 68

Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the QurÕŒn]." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 91

And they did not appraise AllŒh with true appraisal[1] when they said, "AllŒh did not reveal to a human being anything." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture that Moses brought as light and guidance to the people? You [Jews] make it into pages, disclosing [some of] it and concealing much. And you[2] were taught that which you knew not neither you nor your fathers." Say, "AllŒh [revealed it]." Then leave them in their [empty] discourse, amusing themselves.

1- i.e., they did not appreciate the extent of His ability and wisdom.
2- The Jews, or it may refer to the believers, who are taught by the QurÕŒn.

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 92

And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities [i.e., Makkah] and those around it.[1] Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers.

1- i.e., all other peoples.

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 154

Then[1] We gave Moses the Scripture, making complete [Our favor] upon the one who did good [i.e., Moses] and as a detailed explanation of all things and as guidance and mercy that perhaps in the meeting with their Lord they would believe.

1- Meaning "additionally" or "moreover," not denoting time sequence.

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 155

And this [QurÕŒn] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear AllŒh that you may receive mercy.

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 156

[We revealed it] lest you say, "The Scripture was only sent down to two groups before us, but we were of their study unaware,"

Surah: AL‑AN‘ĀM

Ayah : 157

Or lest you say, "If only the Scripture had been revealed to us, we would have been better guided than they." So there has [now] come to you a clear evidence from your Lord and a guidance and mercy. Then who is more unjust than one who denies the verses of AllŒh and turns away from them? We will recompense those who turn away from Our verses with the worst of punishment for their having turned away.

Surah: AL‑A‘RĀF

Ayah : 169

And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities[1] of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it[2] comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about AllŒh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear AllŒh, so will you not use reason?

1- i.e., unlawful gains and pleasures.
2- i.e., a similar temptation.

Surah: AL‑A‘RĀF

Ayah : 170

But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the QurÕŒn] and establish prayer indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.

Surah: HŪD

Ayah : 110

And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word[1] that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed they are, concerning it [i.e., the QurÕŒn], in disquieting doubt.

1- See footnote to 10:19.

Surah: AR-RA‘D

Ayah : 36

And [the believers among] those to whom We have given the [previous] Scripture rejoice at what has been revealed to you, [O Muúammad], but among the [opposing] factions are those who deny part of it [i.e., the QurÕŒn]. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship AllŒh and not associate [anything] with Him. To Him I invite, and to Him is my return."

Surah: AR-RA‘D

Ayah : 37

And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic legislation.[1] And if you should follow their inclinations after what has come to you of knowledge, you would not have against AllŒh any ally or any protector.

1- i.e., revealed in the Arabic language.

Surah: AL‑ISRĀ’

Ayah : 2

And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs,[1]

1- i.e., trust in AllŒh, knowing that He (subúŒnahu wa taÔŒlŒ) is responsible for every occurrence.

Surah: AL‑ISRĀ’

Ayah : 3

O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant.

Surah: AL‑ISRĀ’

Ayah : 4

And We conveyed[1] to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness."

1- Foretold out of divine knowledge of what they would do.

Surah: AL‑ISRĀ’

Ayah : 55

And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

Surah: AL‑ANBIYĀ’

Ayah : 105

And We have already written in the book [of Psalms][1] after the [previous] mention[2] that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants.

1- Az-Zab´r can also mean "scriptures" in general.
2- i.e., the Torah. The "mention" may also refer to the original inscription with AllŒh, i.e., the Preserved Slate (al-Lawú al-Maúf´th).
