And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from AllŒh [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of AllŒh and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.
O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered – the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female.[1] But whoever overlooks from his brother [i.e., the killer] anything,[2] then there should be a suitable follow-up and payment to him [i.e., the deceased's heir or legal representative] with good conduct. This is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever transgresses after that[3] will have a painful punishment.
1- No one else should be executed in place of the killer.
2- By accepting compensation payment rather than execution.
3- After acceptance of compensation.
And kill them [in battle] wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah[1] is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al-îarŒm until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
1- Among the meanings of fitnah are disbelief and its imposition on others, discord, dissension, civil strife, persecution, oppression, injustice, seduction, terrorism, trial and torment.
They ask you about the sacred month[1] – about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of AllŒh and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-îarŒm and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of AllŒh. And fitnah[2] is greater than killing." And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever – for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
1- See footnote to 2:194.
2- See footnote to 2:191.
Those who disbelieve in the signs of AllŒh and kill the prophets without right and kill those who order justice from among the people – give them tidings of a painful punishment.
O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly[1] but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, AllŒh is to you ever Merciful.
1- i.e., unlawfully or under false pretense.
And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake – then the freeing of a believing slave and a compensation payment [diyah] presented to his [i.e., the deceased's] family [is required], unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if he [i.e., the deceased] was from a people at war with you and he was a believer – then [only] the freeing of a believing slave; and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty – then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] – then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively,[1] [seeking] acceptance of repentance from AllŒh.[2] And AllŒh is ever Knowing and Wise.
1- Uninterrupted except when there is an IslŒmically valid reason, as in RamadhŒn.
2- An accidental death usually results from some degree of negligence or error for which the believer feels the need to repent.
And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both made an offering [to AllŒh], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, AllŒh only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].
If you should raise your hand toward me to kill me – I shall not raise my hand toward you to kill you. Indeed, I fear AllŒh, Lord of the worlds.
Indeed, I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."
And his soul permitted to him[1] the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.
1- i.e., the killer allowed himself.
Then AllŒh sent a crow searching [i.e., scratching] in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace[1] of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the disgrace [i.e., body] of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
1- Referring to the dead body, evidence of his shameful deed.
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul[1] or for corruption [done] in the land[2] – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one[3] – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.[4]
1- i.e., in legal retribution for murder.
2- i.e., that requiring the death penalty.
3- Or refrains from killing.
4- Heedless of AllŒh's limits, negligent of their responsibilities.
Indeed, the penalty[1] for those who wage war[2] against AllŒh and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
1- Legal retribution.
2- i.e., commit acts of violence and terrorism against individuals or treason and aggression against the IslŒmic state.
Except for those who return [repenting] before you overcome [i.e., apprehend] them. And know that AllŒh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which AllŒh has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
And do not kill the soul [i.e., person] which AllŒh has forbidden, except by right.[1] And whoever is killed unjustly – We have given his heir authority,[2] but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].
1- i.e., through legal justice or during jihŒd.
2- Grounds for legal action.
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is AllŒh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, AllŒh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with AllŒh, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs,[1] nor will they disobey you in what is right – then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of AllŒh. Indeed, AllŒh is Forgiving and Merciful.
1- This is an allusion to pregnancy and childbirth, i.e., to falsely attribute a child (whether adopted or born of adultery) to a woman's husband.
