Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 1

Certainly has AllŒh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muúammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to AllŒh. And AllŒh hears your dialogue; indeed, AllŒh is Hearing and Seeing.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 2

Those who pronounce thihŒr[1] among you [to separate] from their wives they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, AllŒh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

1- The saying by a husband to his wife, "You are to me like the back of my mother," meaning unlawful to approach. This was a type of divorce practiced by the Arabs before the prophethood of Muúammad ().

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 3

And those who pronounce thihŒr from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and AllŒh is Aware of what you do.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 4

And he who does not find [a slave] then a fast for two months consecutively[1] before they touch one another; and he who is unable then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in AllŒh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] AllŒh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.

1- See footnote to 4:92.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 5

Indeed, those who oppose AllŒh and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 6

On the Day when AllŒh will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. AllŒh had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and AllŒh is, over all things, Witness.[1]

1- See footnote to 4:79.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 7

Have you not considered that AllŒh knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There are not three in a private conversation but that He is the fourth of them,[1] nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed AllŒh is, of all things, Knowing.

1- Through His knowledge of them and their secrets.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 8

Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation [i.e., ridicule and conspiracy] and then return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which AllŒh does not greet you[1] and say among themselves, "Why does AllŒh not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.

1- This is in reference to the Jews who would greet the Muslims with the words "Death be upon you," rather than "Peace."

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 9

O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear AllŒh, to whom you will be gathered.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 10

Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed,[1] but he will not harm them at all except by permission of AllŒh. And upon AllŒh let the believers rely.

1- The reference may be to the sinful type of conversation, as mentioned in the previous verses, or to the practice of two persons speaking in confidence in the presence of a third, which might lead him to assume that he is the subject of their conversation. Such behavior was prohibited by the Prophet () in narrations of al-BukhŒr¥ and Muslim.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 11

O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; AllŒh will make space for you.[1] And when you are told, "Arise,"[2] then arise; AllŒh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And AllŒh is Aware of what you do.

1- In His mercy, in Paradise, or in everything good.
2- To prayer, to battle, or to good deeds.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 12

O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] then indeed, AllŒh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 13

Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and AllŒh has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakŒh and obey AllŒh and His Messenger. And AllŒh is Aware of what you do.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 14

Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom AllŒh has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying].

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 15

AllŒh has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 16

They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of AllŒh, and for them is a humiliating punishment.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 17

Never will their wealth or their children avail them against AllŒh at all. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 18

On the Day AllŒh will resurrect them all, and they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are [standing] on something.[1] Unquestionably, it is they who are the liars.

1- They assume that their lies will be believed and that they will escape detection as they did in worldly life.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 19

Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of AllŒh. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan they will be the losers.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 20

Indeed, the ones who oppose AllŒh and His Messenger those will be among the most humbled.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 21

AllŒh has written [i.e., decreed], "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, AllŒh is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Capítulo: AL‑MUJĀDILAH

Verso : 22

You will not find a people who believe in AllŒh and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose AllŒh and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit[1] from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. AllŒh is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him those are the party of AllŒh. Unquestionably, the party of AllŒh they are the successful.

1- i.e., "that which gives life," explained as the guidance of the QurÕŒn or victory over their opponents.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 1

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts AllŒh,[1] and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

1- See footnote to 57:1.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 2

It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture[1] from their homes at the first gathering.[2] You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from AllŒh; but [the decree of] AllŒh came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.

1- Referring to the Jews of Banun-Nadheer, who broke their pact with the Messenger of AllŒh ().
2- This was the first tme they had ever been gathered and expelled.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 3

And if not that AllŒh had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 4

That is because they opposed AllŒh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes AllŒh then indeed, AllŒh is severe in penalty.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 5

Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks it was by permission of AllŒh and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 6

And what AllŒh restored [of property] to His Messenger from them you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels,[1] but AllŒh gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and AllŒh is over all things competent.

1- Meaning that they went through no hardship (i.e., war) to obtain it.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 7

And what AllŒh restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns it is for AllŒh and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives[1] and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler[2] so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you take; and what he has forbidden you refrain from. And fear AllŒh; indeed, AllŒh is severe in penalty.

1- Those of Ban´ HŒshim and Ban´ Mu‹‹alib, whom he () had prohibited from accepting zakŒh.
2- This ruling concerning properties abandoned by an enemy without a war effort differs from that in S´rah al-AnfŒl, verse 41, which refers to spoils of war in which four fifths is distributed among those who fought in AllŒh's cause.

Capítulo: AL‑ḤASHR

Verso : 8

For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from AllŒh and [His] approval and supporting [the cause of] AllŒh and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
