And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
And Moses had certainly brought you clear proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after that, while you were wrongdoers.
And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said [instead], "We hear and disobey." And their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."
Look how they invent about AllŒh untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin.
They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Satan,
Whom AllŒh has cursed. For he had said, "I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion.
AllŒh has not appointed [such innovations as] baú¥rah or sŒÕibah or wa§¥lah or úŒm.[1] But those who disbelieve invent falsehood about AllŒh, and most of them do not reason.
1- Categories of particular camels which were dedicated to the idols and set free to pasture, liberated from the service of man.
And who is more unjust than one who invents about AllŒh a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed.
And [mention, O Muúammad], when Abraham said to his father zar, "Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error."
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about AllŒh or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what AllŒh revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands,[1] [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against AllŒh other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
1- Striking them, as they are unwilling to give up their souls for judgement.
[It will be said to them], "And you have certainly come to Us alone [i.e., individually] as We created you the first time, and you have left whatever We bestowed upon you behind you. And We do not see with you your 'intercessors' which you claimed that they were among you associates [of AllŒh]. It has [all] been severed between you,[1] and lost from you is what you used to claim."
1- Between yourselves and the claimed associates and intercessors.
And do not insult those they invoke other than AllŒh, lest they insult AllŒh in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
And We took the Children of Israel across the sea; then they came upon a people intent in devotion to [some] idols of theirs. They [the Children of Israel] said, "O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods." He said, "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly.
Indeed, those [worshippers] – destroyed is that in which they are [engaged], and worthless is whatever they were doing."
And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf – an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers.
And when regret overcame them[1] and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers."
1- Literally, "When their hands had been descended upon," i.e., bitten by them out of severe regret.
Indeed, those who took the calf [for worship] will obtain anger from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world, and thus do We recompense the inventors [of falsehood].
Indeed, those you [polytheists] call upon besides AllŒh are servants [i.e., creations] like you. So call upon them and let them respond to you, if you should be truthful.
And those you call upon besides Him are unable to help you, nor can they help themselves."
And if you invite them to guidance, they do not hear; and you see them looking at you while they do not see.
And they worship other than AllŒh that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with AllŒh." Say, "Do you inform AllŒh of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
Say, "Indeed, those who invent falsehood about AllŒh will not succeed."
[For them is brief] enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment because they used to disbelieve.
And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than AllŒh when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.
He sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus AllŒh presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus does AllŒh present examples.
They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of AllŒh, and it is those who are the liars.
And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about AllŒh. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about AllŒh will not succeed.
Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
Those whom they invoke[1] seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
1- Among the righteous of AllŒh's creation, such as angels, prophets, deceased scholars, etc.
And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.
