And when My servants ask you, [O Muúammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
No, it is Him [alone] you would invoke, and He would remove that for which you invoked Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].
Say, "Who rescues you from the darknesses of the land and sea [when] you call upon Him imploring [aloud] and privately, 'If He should save us from this [crisis], we will surely be among the thankful.'"
Say, [O Muúammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you direct yourselves [to the Qiblah] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life] –
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.[1]
1- In supplication or otherwise.
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of AllŒh is near to the doers of good.
And to AllŒh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names.[1] They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
1- i.e., use them improperly or deny them.
It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he[1] might dwell in security with her. And when he [i.e., man] covers her,[2] she carries a light burden [i.e., a pregnancy] and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke AllŒh, their Lord, "If You should give us a good[3] [child], we will surely be among the grateful."
1- i.e., man or every descendent of Adam.
2- An allusion to sexual intercourse.
3- Physically sound or righteous.
Indeed, those you [polytheists] call upon besides AllŒh are servants [i.e., creations] like you. So call upon them and let them respond to you, if you should be truthful.
And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove from him his affliction, he continues [in disobedience] as if he had never called upon Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him. Thus is made pleasing to the transgressors that which they have been doing.
It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them[1] by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from every place and they expect to be engulfed, they supplicate AllŒh, sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful."
1- The change in pronoun from the second to third person shows that the following description applies specifically to the disbelievers.
And do not invoke[1] besides AllŒh that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"[2]
1- i.e., worship.
2- See footnote to 10:95.
To Him [alone] is the supplication of truth. And those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with a thing, except as one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth, but it will not reach it [thus].[1] And the supplication of the disbelievers is not but in error [i.e., futility].
1- The analogy indicates that false deities will never respond to them at all.
And man supplicates for evil [when angry] as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.[1]
1- i.e., impatient, emotional, and acting without forethought.
Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
Those whom they invoke[1] seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
1- Among the righteous of AllŒh's creation, such as angels, prophets, deceased scholars, etc.
Say, "Call upon AllŒh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-RaúmŒn]. Whichever [name] you call – to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.
And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.
And [warn of] the Day when He will say, "Call My 'partners' whom you claimed," and they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them. And We will put between them [a valley of] destruction.
He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled[1] with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy [i.e., disappointed].
1- Literally, "ignited." The spread of white hair throughout the head is likened to that of fire in the bush.
And I will leave you and those you invoke other than AllŒh and will invoke[1] my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy [i.e., disappointed]."
1- i.e., worship.
So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate[1] Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.
1- i.e., worship.
He invokes instead of AllŒh that which neither harms him nor benefits him. That is what is the extreme error.
He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit – how wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.
For every [religious] community We have appointed rites which they perform. So, [O Muúammad], let them [i.e., the disbelievers] not contend with you over the matter but invite [them] to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.
And, [O Muúammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."
And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;
Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."
And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes[1] and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous."
1- i.e., a source of happiness due to their righteousness.
Say, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?"[1] For you [disbelievers] have denied, so it [i.e., your denial] is going to be adherent.[2]
1- i.e., faith and worship. An alternative meaning is "What would my Lord do with you..."
2- It will remain with them, causing punishment to be required and imperative upon them.
