أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ
Have you not considered, [O Muúammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?[1]
1- i.e., the army under the command of Abrahah al-Ashram which was accompanied by a huge elephant and came with the intention of destroying the KaÔbah at Makkah.
أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِي تَضۡلِيلٖ
Did He not make their plan into misguidance?[1]
1- Causing them to perish.
وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ
And He sent against them birds in flocks,
تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٖ مِّن سِجِّيلٖ
Striking them with stones of hard clay,
فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٖ مَّأۡكُولِۭ
And He made them like eaten straw.[1]
1- i.e., husks which have been chewed by cattle. This event took place in the year of the Prophet's birth.
لِإِيلَٰفِ قُرَيۡشٍ
For the accustomed security of the Quraysh[1] -
1- i.e., the honor and reputation AllŒh had given them as guardians of the Holy KaÔbah, which allowed them to travel without fear of being harmed.
إِۦلَٰفِهِمۡ رِحۡلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيۡفِ
Their accustomed security [in] the caravan of winter and summer[1] -
1- i.e., the trading caravans that traveled south in winter and north in summer.
فَلۡيَعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّ هَٰذَا ٱلۡبَيۡتِ
Let them worship the Lord of this House,[1]
1- i.e., the KaÔbah.
ٱلَّذِيٓ أَطۡعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٖ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنۡ خَوۡفِۭ
Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger and made them safe, [saving them] from fear.
أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ
Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِي يَدُعُّ ٱلۡيَتِيمَ
For that is the one who drives away the orphan
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ
And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
فَوَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُصَلِّينَ
So woe to those who pray
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَن صَلَاتِهِمۡ سَاهُونَ
[But] who are heedless of their prayer[1] –
1- i.e., the hypocrites who are unconcerned if they miss prayers when no one sees them.
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ يُرَآءُونَ
Those who make show [of their deeds]
وَيَمۡنَعُونَ ٱلۡمَاعُونَ
And withhold [simple] assistance.
إِنَّآ أَعۡطَيۡنَٰكَ ٱلۡكَوۡثَرَ
Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muúammad], al-Kawthar.
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنۡحَرۡ
So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to Him alone].
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلۡأَبۡتَرُ
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.[1]
1- From all good in this world and the Hereafter.
قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ
Say, "O disbelievers,
لَآ أَعۡبُدُ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ
I do not worship what you worship.
وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ عَٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعۡبُدُ
Nor are you worshippers of what I worship.
وَلَآ أَنَا۠ عَابِدٞ مَّا عَبَدتُّمۡ
Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship.
وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ عَٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعۡبُدُ
Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
لَكُمۡ دِينُكُمۡ وَلِيَ دِينِ
For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
إِذَا جَآءَ نَصۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡفَتۡحُ
When the victory of AllŒh has come and the conquest,[1]
1- The conquest of Makkah.
وَرَأَيۡتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدۡخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفۡوَاجٗا
And you see the people entering into the religion of AllŒh in multitudes,
فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابَۢا
Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of Repentance.[1]

تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٖ وَتَبَّ
May the hands of Ab´ Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.[1]
1- Ab´ Lahab (the Prophet's uncle) , who was an enemy of IslŒm.
مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.
