البَلَدِ Al-Balad 1 الآية :

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 2 الآية :

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

And you, [O Muúammad], are free of restriction in this city

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 3 الآية :

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ

And [by] the father[1] and that which was born [of him],

1- Said to be Adam (upon him be peace).

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 4 الآية :

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ

We have certainly created man into hardship.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 5 الآية :

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 6 الآية :

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 7 الآية :

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Does he think that no one has seen him?

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 8 الآية :

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ

Have We not made for him two eyes?

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 9 الآية :

وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ

And a tongue and two lips?

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 10 الآية :

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

And have shown him the two ways?[1]

1- Of good and evil.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 11 الآية :

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.[1]

1- i.e., the steep incline or obstacle. In other words, he has not spent in the cause of AllŒh but only boasts of spending in front of others.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 12 الآية :

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 13 الآية :

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

It is the freeing of a slave

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 14 الآية :

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 15 الآية :

يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ

An orphan of near relationship

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 16 الآية :

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ

Or a needy person in misery

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 17 الآية :

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 18 الآية :

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ

Those are the companions of the right.[1]

1- Or "the companions of good fortune," i.e., those who receive their records in their right hands and proceed to Paradise.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 19 الآية :

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.[1]

1- Or "the companions of ill fortune," i.e., those who receive their records in their left hands and proceed to Hell.

البَلَدِ Al-Balad 20 الآية :

عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

Over them will be fire closed in.[1]

1- The cover over Hell will be sealed and locked, containing its fire and its inhabitants.
