المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 1 الآية :

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ

O you who covers himself [with a garment],[1]

1- Referring to the Prophet ().


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 2 الآية :

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ

Arise and warn.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 3 الآية :

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ

And your Lord glorify.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 4 الآية :

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ

And your clothing purify.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 5 الآية :

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ

And uncleanliness[1] avoid.

1- Specifically, idols or generally, bad conduct and morals.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 6 الآية :

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

And do not confer favor to acquire more[1].

1- An alternative meaning is "Do not consider any favor you have conferred to be great."


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 7 الآية :

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ

But for your Lord be patient.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 8 الآية :

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ

And when the trumpet is blown,


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 9 الآية :

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ

That Day will be a difficult day


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 10 الآية :

عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ

For the disbelievers not easy.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 11 الآية :

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا

Leave Me with the one I created alone[1]

1- i.e., without wealth or children. The reference is to al-Waleed bin al-Mugheerah, who after inclining toward the QurÕŒn, denied it publicly in order to win the approval of the Quraysh.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 12 الآية :

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا

And to whom I granted extensive wealth


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 13 الآية :

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا

And children present [with him]


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 14 الآية :

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 15 الآية :

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ

Then he desires that I should add more.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 16 الآية :

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 17 الآية :

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

I will cover him with arduous torment.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 18 الآية :

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

Indeed, he thought and deliberated.[1]

1- About what he would say concerning the QurÕŒn and how he might discredit the Prophet ().


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 19 الآية :

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 20 الآية :

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 21 الآية :

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

Then he considered [again];


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 22 الآية :

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

Then he frowned and scowled;


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 23 الآية :

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ

Then he turned back and was arrogant


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 24 الآية :

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 25 الآية :

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ

This is not but the word of a human being."


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 26 الآية :

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ

I will drive him into Saqar.[1]

1- One of the proper names of Hell.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 27 الآية :

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

And what can make you know what is Saqar?


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 28 الآية :

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 29 الآية :

لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ

Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.


المُدَّثِّرِ Al-Muddaththir 30 الآية :

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ

Over it are nineteen [angels].
