And fulfill the covenant of AllŒh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made AllŒh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, AllŒh knows what you do.

And if AllŒh had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills.[1] And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.

1- According to His knowledge of each soul's preference.

Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.

Indeed, this QurÕŒn guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward

Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,"

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord[1] for reward and better for [one's] hope.

1- i.e., in His sight or evaluation.

Say, [O Muúammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?

[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."

Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."

But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.

He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.

But those who disbelieved their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds AllŒh before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and AllŒh is swift in account.

Unquestionably, to AllŒh belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Already He knows that upon which you [stand][1] and [knows] the Day[2] when they will be returned to Him and He will inform them of what they have done. And AllŒh is Knowing of all things.

1- i.e., your position the basis for your actions (whether sincere faith or hypocrisy) and the condition of your souls.
2- The meaning can also be rendered "...and [let them beware of] the Day..."

Indeed, for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made pleasing to them their deeds, so they wander blindly.

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, AllŒh is Free from need of the worlds.

And those who believe and do righteous deeds We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.

Whoever disbelieves upon him is [the consequence of] his disbelief. And whoever does righteousness they are for themselves preparing,

Say, "You will not be asked about what we committed, and we will not be asked about what you do."

And it is not your wealth or your children that bring you nearer to Us in position, but it is [by being] one who has believed and done righteousness. For them there will be the double reward for what they did, and they will be in the upper chambers [of Paradise], safe [and secure].

Whoever desires honor [through power] then to AllŒh belongs all honor.[1] To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it.[2] But they who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and the plotting of those it will perish.

1- See footnote to 4:139.
2- For acceptance by AllŒh, meaning that righteous deeds are confirmation and proof of what is uttered by the tongue.

And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And if a heavily laden soul calls [another] to [carry some of] its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he should be a close relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord unseen and have established prayer. And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to AllŒh is the [final] destination.

And who is better in speech than one who invites to AllŒh and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."

And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon, the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

Indeed, those who inject deviation into Our verses[1] are not concealed from Us. So, is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do whatever you will; indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.

1- Through deviant recitations or interpretations.

Whoever does righteousness it is for his [own] soul; and whoever does evil [does so] against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.

Whoever does a good deed it is for himself; and whoever does evil it is against it [i.e., the self or soul]. Then to your Lord you will be returned.

Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds [make them] equal in their life and their death?[1] Evil is that which they judge [i.e., assume].

1- Another meaning is "...[the evildoers being] equal in their life and their death," i.e., unresponsive to guidance.

And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do.
