التكوير At-Takwîr 1 الآية :

إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

التكوير At-Takwîr 2 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

التكوير At-Takwîr 3 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ

And when the mountains are removed

التكوير At-Takwîr 4 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ

And when full-term she-camels[1] are neglected

1- Those ten months pregnant and nearing delivery. This verse alludes to distraction from the most valued of possessions.

التكوير At-Takwîr 5 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ

And when the wild beasts are gathered

التكوير At-Takwîr 6 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ

And when the seas are filled with flame[1]

1- Or "when the seas have overflowed [into each other]."

التكوير At-Takwîr 7 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ

And when the souls are paired[1]

1- With another like soul. It can also mean "joined" (with their groups or sects).

التكوير At-Takwîr 8 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡ

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

التكوير At-Takwîr 9 الآية :

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبٖ قُتِلَتۡ

For what sin she was killed

التكوير At-Takwîr 10 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ

And when the pages[1] are spread [i.e., made public]

1- On which are recorded the deeds of all people.

التكوير At-Takwîr 11 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ

And when the sky is stripped away

التكوير At-Takwîr 12 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

التكوير At-Takwîr 13 الآية :

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ

And when Paradise is brought near,

التكوير At-Takwîr 14 الآية :

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].[1]

1- i.e., all of one's deeds from worldly life, which have accompanied the soul to the Hereafter.

التكوير At-Takwîr 15 الآية :

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ

So I swear by the retreating stars –

التكوير At-Takwîr 16 الآية :

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

التكوير At-Takwîr 17 الآية :

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ

And by the night as it closes in[1]

1- An alternative meaning is "as it departs."

التكوير At-Takwîr 18 الآية :

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

التكوير At-Takwîr 19 الآية :

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖ

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the QurÕŒn] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

التكوير At-Takwîr 20 الآية :

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٖ

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

التكوير At-Takwîr 21 الآية :

مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖ

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

التكوير At-Takwîr 22 الآية :

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٖ

And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muúammad (^) ] is not [at all] mad.[1]

1- Literally, "possessed by jinn."

التكوير At-Takwîr 23 الآية :

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ

And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.[1]

1- i.e., the eastern horizon, where the sun rises. See footnote to 53:6

التكوير At-Takwîr 24 الآية :

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٖ

And he [i.e., Muúammad (^)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.[1]

1- Prophet Muúammad (^) did not withhold that knowledge of the unseen which AllŒh had revealed to him in the QurÕŒn.

التكوير At-Takwîr 25 الآية :

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖ

And it [i.e., the QurÕŒn] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

التكوير At-Takwîr 26 الآية :

فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ

So where are you going?[1]

1- In your denial of the QurÕŒn and in your accusations against the Prophet (^). The meaning is essentially "Surely, you have strayed far from AllŒh's path."

التكوير At-Takwîr 27 الآية :

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

التكوير At-Takwîr 28 الآية :

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

التكوير At-Takwîr 29 الآية :

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

And you do not will except that AllŒh wills - Lord of the worlds.
